Columbia Law faculty discuss the implications of important Supreme Court decisions from the 2022–2023 term.
In the first Lawyers, Community, and Impact event of the academic year, four Columbia Law legal scholars discussed several recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions:
- Lecturer in Law Precious D. Benally ’13 reviewed the implications for Indian tribal law in the court’s upholding of the Indian Child Welfare Act.
- Katherine M. Franke, James L. Dohr Professor of Law, discussed the court’s ruling involving free expression and anti-discrimination law in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis.
- Olatunde C.A. Johnson, Ruth Bader Ginsburg ’59 Professor of Law, explored the impact on race-conscious admissions in higher education following the court ruling that admissions policies at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina violate the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.
- Thomas W. Merrill, Charles Evans Hughes Professor of Law, discussed the court’s ruling against the Biden administration’s attempt to cancel student debt due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Biden v. Nebraska.
The event was moderated by Kathryn Judge, Harvey J. Goldschmid Professor of Law and Vice Dean for Intellectual Life, with opening remarks from Gillian Lester, Dean and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law.
