The former public defender is launching the new Criminal Law Clinic at Columbia Law School.

A lawyer with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry, Morten is the founding director of Columbia Law School’s new Science, Health, and Information Clinic.

Despite COVID-19 restrictions, students in Columbia Law School clinics have been gaining real-world experience as advocates, educators, litigators, mediators, and researchers.

As a future public defender, the former New York National Guard member hopes to use her legal education to fight for systemic change.

Students use their legal skills to help small-business owners, incarcerated individuals, unemployed workers, immigrants, and others affected by the crisis.

For the first time, the four competitors argued before the judges remotely. Christen E. Hammock ’20 took home the coveted Lawrence S. Greenbaum Prize for best oral presentation and the prize for best final-round brief.

This year’s case is Chen v. Secret Saturdays Inc. and the competition takes place on May 1. Khanarian will be arguing for the defendant-appellant.
