Raul Carrillo

Raúl’s scholarship critically analyzes the laws governing financial technology and innovation. Current writing topics include the regulation of partnerships between Wall Street banks and Silicon Valley financial technology (fintech) companies, the design of public fintech infrastructure, and government efforts to surveil illicit flows in the cryptocurrency industry. 

Before his fellowship, Raúl was an Associate Research Scholar at Yale Law School and a Resident Fellow at the Yale Information Society Project. He also worked as the Deputy Director of the Law and Political Economy (LPE) Project, an international network of scholars, practitioners, and students developing proposals to build a more just, equal, and sustainable future. Raúl is an Affiliate of the Center for Critical Race + Digital Studies. 

Before his turn toward academia, Raúl was Policy Counsel at the Demand Progress Education Fund and a Fellow at the Americans for Financial Reform Education Fund. Previously, he worked as a Staff Attorney at New Economy Project, bringing impact litigation and providing free legal advice and services to low-income New Yorkers and community groups. He has also served as Special Counsel to the Enforcement Director at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He regularly advises public interest groups and policymakers and testifies before Congress.

Raúl is also Co-Chair of the Columbia Seminar on Full Employment. He serves on the Executive Committee of the National Jobs For All Network, the Leadership Committee of Public Money Action, the Board of the Demand Progress Education Fund, the Advisory Board of the Progressive Talent Pipeline, and the Advisory Councils of Our Money and The Action Lab.
