Legal Practice Workshop I

In this course, students begin to develop the research, writing, and analytical skills central to legal practice. In Legal Practice Workshop I, which runs through the fall semester, students focus on predictive writing and other practical skills, including client counseling and negotiation. Student receive intensive training through written assignments placed in practice contexts with different audiences. Classes are small and interactive, and students receive individualized feedback through personal conferences. A multi-week legal research module is led by Reference Librarians.
In Legal Practice II, which is taught in the spring, students continue to build on the skills learned in the fall. This portion of the course focuses on persuasive writing and oral advocacy, with a particular emphasis on appellate advocacy. Students research, write, and orally argue an appellate brief through the Foundation Moot Court program or one of the alternative intermural competitions. (See Foundation Moot Court). Classes continue to meet in seminar format with individual conferences throughout the drafting process.
