Moot Court Student Editor II

Academic points for L6781 (Spring term) are subject to a four-credit limit (see Rules for the J.D. Degree, Rule 1.13); no academic credit for L6681 (Fall term).

Open to second-year students and to a limited number of third-year students with permission of the Moot Court Director. Acceptance into this class is based upon an application process circulated in the spring.

Student editors work in teams of two or four to design an appellate advocacy problem to be used by first-year students in the spring moot court program. During the fall semester, editors research and write a bench memorandum and record for their problem. They must revise the bench memorandum and record in response to feedback provided by the Moot Court Director. Students who enroll as student editors (whether for the Foundation Moot Court program or one of the intramural programs that satisfies the Foundation requirement) must also enroll in L6674 (Workshop in Briefcraft) in the fall.

In the spring term, student editors mentor first-year students as they prepare briefs on the problems devised by the editors the previous term. Editors work in close consultation with the students’ Legal Practice Workshop instructor. Editors also assist the Legal Practice Workshop instructors in preparing students for oral argument. In connection with this work, editors also serve as Teaching Fellows for 1 point of credit for the spring semester Legal Practice Workshop.

During the spring term, editors meet regularly with the Moot Court Director to discuss issues that arise in their work with the first-year students.
